Dr Jhala, after completing MB BS in 1986, started training as a resident Obstetrician & Gynaecologist at the B.J.Medical College & the new Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad, in 1987 for three years.
Dr Jhala received his M.D. (Indian Postgraduate degree) in Obstetrics & Gynaecology in 1990.
He then went & worked in UK from 1991-1996, where he worked in the following NHS hospitals in the capacity of SHO, Registrar & lastly as Senior Registrar in Obstetrics & Gynaecology.

During that period he gained very valuable experience in general obstetrics & Gynaecology, which exposed him to a wide spectrum of complicated cases. He gained considerable experience in management of high-risk pregnancy & endoscopic surgery. He also obtained basic & advanced ultrasound training in fetal medicine at the King’s College, London with the pioneers like Professor Stuart Campbell & Professor Kypros Nicolaides.
He was awarded MRCOG (the British postgraduate degree in Obstetrics & Gynaecology) in 1994 by Professor Geoffrey Chamberlain, then president of the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists of UK.
He returned to India in 1996 & since then he is practising as a private consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist along with his wife Dr Meena Jhala, who is a consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist as well.
Currently he is one of the two directors of the department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology of the Mayflower Women’s Hospital.
In the year 2006, his MRCOG degree was elevated to FRCOG by Professor Robert Shaw, then president of the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists of UK, for having advanced the science & art of Obstetrics & Gynaecology.
Although state-of-the-art surgical treatment is his forte, Dr. Jhala has a medical philosophy which is very patient friendly.
Surgical intervention is only recommended as a last resort, when all more conservative options have been explored or are clearly inferior choices to surgery.
Dr. Yogendra Jhala, along with his colleague Dr Sanjay Patel, has played an integral role in the development of several laparoscopic techniques in standard use today. Collectively they have performed more than 19000 endoscopic surgeries & that has made them the most sought-after endoscopic surgeons for live-demonstrations of endoscopic surgeries at several national & international conferences. He has lectured and taught courses on these techniques both nationally and internationally, bringing his expertise to hundreds of physicians. Through his commitment to the refinement of minimal access surgical procedures and the dissemination of its advantages, he continues to share his experience with physicians worldwide by his participation in educational courses and workshops.
Dr. Jhala performs the full spectrum of Obstetrics & Gynaecological surgery, with a particular interest in minimally invasive endoscopic surgery, i.e. laparoscopic hysterectomy & myomectomy for fibroids, ovarian cyst, endometriosis & management of high-risk pregnancies.
He has written as a co-author with Dr Sanjay Patel, chapters in several text-books.
He is also a course director of the Endoscopy workshops, held at the Mayflower Hospital 3-4 times in a year, supported by
Karl Storz (Germany) & recognised by FOGSI.
He, along with his colleague Dr Sanjay Patel, has won following awards & accolades.
- 1st prize of Golden Telescope at the Indian Congress on Endoscopy & Infertility in November 2004 at Khajuraho for his video presentation of ‘Laparoscopic management of complications.’
- 1st prize of Platinum Telescope at the Indo-French Conference in October 2006 at Varanasi for his video presentation on ‘Laparoscopic management of broad ligament fibroid.’
- 1st prize of Aescalup-B Braun at the International Conference on the Fallopian Tube at Kolkata in October 2007 for his video presentation on ‘Laparoscopic Tubo-ovarian adhesiolysis.’
- 1st prize of Suili Rudra Sinha award at the All India Congress of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists in 2007.
Dr. Jhala is a life member of the FOGSI & IAGE (Indian Association of the Gynaecologic Endoscopists) & was also appointed as committee member of the IAGE in 2005 & 2006.
Dr Jhala is also appointed as a fellow representative of the western zone of India by the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists, UK.
