What is IVF

What is IVF?

IVF is simply a process by which the fertilization of egg by the sperms will be happening outside the womb of a woman. It can also be explained as an assisted fertilization technique by which the eggs will be fertilized in vitro (Inside the Glass). IVF will be used to overcome the infertility. For the IVF process, a healthy egg and healthy sperm and a uterus to maintain the pregnancy conditions are required. In case of so many patients, the Injectable Gonadotropins are likely used. But this will be done in close monitoring condition. Estradiol level and the follicular growth will be continuously checked by close monitoring. It is necessary to have injection for 10 days.

The concept

In Vitro Fertilization or IVF is a process by which the eggs are taken from the woman’s ovaries and are fertilized outside the body by the sperms in the laboratory conditions and the final embryos formed are implanted into the uterus again to achieve pregnancy.

Who does this helps?

The IVF was at first been done to people who have bilateral tubal blocks. But today it is offered to people with mild male factor and also to the couples who are unsuccessful in their initial level treatments like ovulation induction and IUI.

What is the chance of success?

There are various factors that are the reason behind the success of IVF. The age of the patients is the major factor and next comes the duration and type of infertility. Ovarian response is also an important factor when it comes to IVF.

Commencement of treatment

The patients will be asked to be at the Mayflower IVF fertility center at right time after their menstrual cycle.

Ovarian stimulation

The medications will be given to the patients to increase the number of eggs in their ovaries and you will be following some protocols based on your medical history.

Long protocol – in this the patients will be medicated after 21 days from their menstrual cycle and the medications will be continued on the same time on second and third days also.

Antagonist protocol – in this case the medications will be given on the second day of the patient’s menstrual cycle and the medication will be continued on the next days even. But it is important that in both the protocols, the timing of medication must be continued the same on everyday.

Ultra sound examination

The Ultrasound Examination will be conducted on a regular basis to the patients to check the response of the eggs in the ovaries.

HCG injection/GnRH injection

The final maturation of eggs will be triggered by this method and these eggs will be collected after 34 to 26 hours.

Ovum pickup

The eggs are generally removed from the ovaries by the transvaginal sonography. These procedures will take a total of 15 to 20 minutes of time. The patients can go home after 2 to 3 hours from the procedure.

Sperm collection

The fresh sample of sperms will be taken on the day of ovum pickup. If the husband is feeling discomfort in collecting sperms on request, he can also collect it at home and can bring it to the center within 30 minutes. Suppose if the husband is not available on the day of ovum pickup, then the already frozen sample of sperms can be used.

After ovum pickup

After the ovum pickup and sperms are collected, the fertilization will be done. The embryologist will be continuously observing the fertilization and further developments.

Embryo transfer

The final embryo formed will be implanted into the uterus on the 4th to 5th day after the fertilization. The number of embryos to be transferred will be discussed with the patients and will be done by sonography.

Pregnancy test

After exactly two weeks from the embryo transfer, the HCG test will be offered to check whether pregnancy was achieved or not. Based on the results of the test, you will be offered with right medications, treatments after a course of discussion on them.
