Endometriosis is a complex and often debilitating condition that requires a comprehensive approach to treatment. At Mayflower Women’s Hospital, we have developed a unique method that focuses on thorough diagnosis, precise surgical techniques, and multidisciplinary care to provide the best possible outcomes for our patients.
Here’s a detailed look at our approach:
Extensive Diagnosis to Map All Involvement:
Before any treatment begins, our team conducts thorough diagnostic evaluations to accurately map the extent of Endometriosis involvement. Using advanced imaging techniques and diagnostic tools, we ensure a clear understanding of the disease’s reach within the body
Pelvic Exam:
When a woman presents with symptoms such as pelvic pain or painful periods, a pelvic exam is conducted. During this exam, the doctor manually assesses the pelvic organs, for any abnormalities, tenderness, or masses. This examination can provide valuable initial insights into the presence of Endometriosis.
Transvaginal Ultrasound:
In cases where further investigation is needed, a transvaginal ultrasound may be recommended. This imaging technique allows us to visualize the pelvic organs, including the uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes. It helps identify any cysts, masses, or other abnormalities that may be indicative of Endometriosis.
By accurately diagnosing Endometriosis and assessing its extent, we can develop personalized treatment plans that address each patient’s unique needs and improve their quality of life.
MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging):
For a more detailed assessment of the pelvic area, an MRI scan is tobe done. MRI provides high-resolution images that can reveal the presence and extent of deep infiltrating Endometriosis, which may not be easily detected by other imaging modalities. This information is crucial for planning surgical interventions and determining the optimal treatment approach.
Diagnostic Laparoscopy:
When Endometriosis is suspected but not definitively diagnosed through non-invasive methods, a diagnostic laparoscopy is performed. This minimally invasive procedure involves inserting a thin, lighted tube (laparoscope) through a small incision in the abdomen to visualize the pelvic organs. During the procedure, the surgeon carefully examines the pelvic cavity for signs of Endometriosis, such as lesions, adhesions, and implants. Biopsy samples are taken for further analysis to confirm the diagnosis.
CA-125 Blood Test:
While not specific to Endometriosis, the CA-125 blood test measures levels of a protein that may be elevated in women with the condition. This test is often used as an adjunct to other diagnostic methods and can provide additional information to support the diagnosis.
